Verdict: ⚠️ Straightforward merge can cause visible changes. With the fix described below, no visible or functional differences vs master.

What is this bump

  • Major update of a direct dependency (package.json → dependencies): MUI X Data Grid, the table component from MUI.
  • The lockfile also updates its internals (@mui/x-internals 9.14.0, @mui/x-virtualizer 0.7.2) and adds @base-ui/utils 0.3.2 plus 3 nested copies of @mui/utils@9.4.0, because we are on MUI 7.
  • Shared packages bumped as a side effect: react-is 19.3.0, @babel/runtime 7.29.7, reselect 5.3.0, use-sync-external-store 1.7.0.

What it changes (migration guide, changelog)

  • Requires @mui/material/@mui/system ≥ 7.3.0 (we have 7.3.5, no peer warnings).
  • Browser baseline raised to Chrome/Edge 117, Firefox 121, Safari/iOS 17.0 (was 109/115/15.4).
  • UI tweaks:
    • the sort icon uses an MUI Tooltip instead of the native title (#20460),
    • new sort-button styles (background, hover opacity),
    • filter label "Columns" → "Column" (#21935),
    • pagination numbers are formatted.
  • Internal DOM/ARIA changes (role="none", filler divs) with no visual effect.
  • Bug fixes, mostly in features we don't use (editing, data source, pinning, autosize).
  • No CVE fixes for the community package (the exceljs CVEs only affect Premium).

What it can affect in this project

  • One usage: DataGrid in src/WrapperApp/components/Results/ResultsTable.tsx. It is the 0D estimator table in Results (e.g. ENTRANCE / PEAK tabs), covering sort, filter, column menu, column visibility, pagination, and our sx styling.
  • CSV export and the unit switch are our own code and don't depend on the grid.

Observed changes and the fix

To reproduce: Examples → SHIELDHIT "Proton pencil beam in water" → Results → ENTRANCE. Each screenshot shows three rows: master → this PR without the fix → this PR with the fix. The red box marks the difference.

1. Hover the "Value" column header. The unsorted hint arrow is brighter (opacity 0.78 vs 0.5).

2. Hover the sort arrow next to "Value" and wait ~1 s. An MUI tooltip "Sort" appears and the hover circle is gone. On master the tooltip is the native title, which the OS draws, so it is not visible in screenshots.

3. "Value" column menu (⋮) → Filter. The field label changes from "Columns" to "Column".

The fix only touches ResultsTable.tsx and adds a new ResultsTableSortIcon.tsx:

  • a columnHeaderSortIcon slot recreating the v8 sort button (native title, no Tooltip),
  • localeText for filterPanelColumn and the v8 paginationDisplayedRows,
  • sx restoring the v8 sort-button background, hover and 0.5 opacity.

With the fix, the cropped regions are byte-identical to master. Across the full screen, only the commit hash in the sidebar differs.

Why the rest should be fine

  • Single usage. The grid is used only in the results table, and every interaction there was compared with master:

    • sort asc/desc, filter (match / no results), column menu, Manage columns, keyboard navigation, selection,
    • Rows per page, CSV export (byte-identical), dark/light theme, narrow width, horizontal scroll.

  • Shared deps are inert for us.

    • react-is: the only change is a 1-line ViewTransition check, which we don't use.
    • @babel/runtime: the only changed helper (wrapAsyncGenerator) is not in our bundle.
    • reselect / use-sync-external-store: used only by the grid.

  • CSS diff. I compared every rendered grid CSS rule. The only remaining differences are for features we don't use (pinning, autosize, fill handle, pivot) or are layout internals with identical element geometry.

  • Rest of the app is identical to master. I checked the editor (add/select/edit), examples, JSROOT plots, the Pyodide converter output, project export/import, the Simulations/About pages, the console and network requests.

  • Checks pass.

    • tsc ✅ and build ✅.
    • Tests ✅: 38/38, including Selenium e2e against the app on :3000. ProjectMenu › New item… is flaky on master too.
    • PR CI ✅.

@grzanka, I have a question here: should we keep the new “Sort” tooltip? In my opinion it’s a nice improvement- it clearly shows what the arrow does. If we agree, I can drop this part of the fix.

Thanks for the screenshots, that was a good idea. You can go ahead with the improvements, it looks nice
